Since 1989, the company has concentrated on the development of coal seam methane gas from the widespread, deep coal seams in the Bowen Basin area of central Queensland, Australia. The considerable extent of the coal seam methane gas reserves discovered in Queensland, and its reliable commercial production from the Fairview Field, has laid the foundation for a long-term association with Queensland and provided significant economic benefits to regional communities. Project supporting local communities A gas flare on the CSM field Dr James Butler and his son James Butler, Jr founded Tri-Star Petroleum Company and are recognized as pioneers and developers of coal seam methane gas in Australia. Tri-Star is credited with Australia’s first commercially viable coal seam methane gas produced from the Comet Ridge Production Facility at the Fairview CSM Field, which is now operated by Santos TOGA Pty Ltd. They also discovered the Durham Ranch CSM Field, which upon farmout, Origin Energy has continued to develop as the Spring Gully Project.
